Chiapas: PT Candidate, Gutierrez Vazquez, Kidnapped in Frontera Comalapa

On April 27^th, three days before the start of the municipal campaigns in Chiapas, Rey David Gutierrez Vazquez, PT candidate for mayor of Frontera Comalapa, was kidnapped in front of his family. A commando of armed men broke into his house around 11:00 p.m. ‘’Amigo Rey”, as he is known, had previously received threats.

In context, it is worth remembering that in 2021 Gutierrez Vazquez was the candidate for the MORENA party in the Frontera Comalapa municipal elections. When on the day of the elections unknown men burned the electoral ballots that were kept in a precinct, Rey David filed an appeal with the Electoral Court of the State of Chiapas. But in the end he failed to achieve the position. “In that electoral process, his then campaign coordinator, Edy Leonel Perez Escobedo, was kidnapped by an armed group and released days later,” some media outlets recalled.

On December 14^th, 2023, the former mayor of Frontera Comalapa and executive coordinator of the Agricultural Development Fund of Chiapas, Iran Merida Matamoros was kidnapped by armed men. Merida Matamoros, who was mayor for the PRI, was seeking the candidacy for the municipal presidency of Frontera Comalapa for the PVEM and MORENA. More than four months later he reappeared “in a video that was broadcast this Sunday night on social networks but it is unknown if he is still alive or in the power of the criminal group,” El Universal stated.
