Chiapas: women in resistance denounce violence against women

On 5 April, female members of the Coordination of Women in Resistance met in San Cristóbal de las Casas to analyze the situation of violence that their communities face. By means of a communiqué the same day they make public their alarm, “due to the grave death-threats and aggressions suffered by our comrade Rosa Díaz Gómez in the community Jotola in the municipality of Chilón, Chiapas.”

On 24 March 2010, Rosa Díaz Gómez was attacked by a group of persons named the “Cruz Méndez.” They destroyed everything that was in her house and aggressively and violently beat her, leaving her dangerously injured and defenseless. The Women in Resistance denounce that “all this has happened for our having been organized and struggled for our rights, principally the right to land. Although there has been legal action taken in the case, this does not guarantee access to justice.” They furthermore mention, because on 31 March were released the aggressors of Díaz Gómez, that “our comrade finds herself basing her fear in the fact of having her personal integrity and life newly attacked by her aggressors.”
