On April 24th, Red TDT published a statement in which it rejected “the criminalization carried out by President AMLO in his morning press conference to delegitimize the Fray Bartolome de Las Casas enter for Human Rights in Chiapas and the Miguel Agustin Pro Juarez Human Rights Center in Mexico City”. It recalled that both organizations have been working for more than 35 years in the promotion and defense of human rights in Mexico and recognized “their contribution to improving the conditions of the population in the country in the fight for truth, justice and in favor of democracy”.
“This speech aggravates reality, since Mexico continues to be one of the most dangerous countries for journalism and the defense of human rights. According to the UNHCHR, between January 2019 and February 2024, at least 103 murders of human rights defenders, 41 journalists, seven media workers have been recorded in possible relation to their work; additionally, 38 defenders or journalists were disappeared, 25 regained their freedom and 13 are still missing,” it denounced.
“We cannot allow the defense of human rights that these organizations have carried out be equated with the activity itself considered as “an attitude very much in favor of conservatism” or “they are seeking to create an environment of violence that does not have such dimensions” or worse “magnifying things,”’’ stressed Red TDT.
For its part, the Miguel Agustin Pro Juarez Human Rights Center (Prodh Center) regretted the disqualification against it and said it hoped that “the next administration respects the work of defending human rights without denying reality.”
In his morning session on April 21st, AMLO said of the two organizations that “they are seeking to create an environment of violence, which does not have the dimensions that you are registering. I am not saying that there is no violence, I am saying that they are magnifying things.”
