In violent events that occurred on the night of May 16th, 2024, the candidate for the municipal presidency of La Concordia for the Chiapas Popular Party, Lucero Esmeralda Lopez Maza, was murdered. According to the State Attorney General’s Office, the candidate along with five members of her campaign team were executed, so an investigation file was opened for those responsible for these events.
Members of the State Preventive Police, who were the first to arrive at the scene, confirmed the death of the six people; three females and three males. The FGE said in a statement that “according to the first investigations, a confrontation occurred between armed civilians during a political campaign event with the presence of the candidate of the Chiapas Popular Party, at the intersection of the La Independencia neighborhood, of La Concordia.”
According to data recorded by Animal Politico, so far 29 candidates have been murdered in the framework of the elections that will take place on June 2nd, of which five have occurred in the State of Chiapas, Chiapas and Guerrero being the states with the most murdered candidates in the country.
