On July 8th, the President of the Republic, Andres Manuel Lopez Obredor traveled to Washington to meet with US President Donald Trump, with the aim of celebrating the new trade agreement between the United States, Mexico, and Canada, the USMCA. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was conspicuous in his absence.

AMLO’s first trip out of Mexico in representation as president has been criticized by some, especially given the fear that he may submit to the will of the American president and taking into account the latter’s constant attacks on Mexicans. In addition, some voices have questioned the completion of the trip in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to health, social and economic crises in the two countries.

AMLO made a 15-minute speech focused on his respectful relationship with Trump: “That is why I am here to express to the people of the United States that their president has behaved towards us with kindness and respect. He has treated us for what we are: a dignified, free, democratic and sovereign country and people.”

Trump, who has been accused of using this visit to favor his presidential campaign, gave his counterpart a warm welcome. They both held friendly speeches and pledged to work together as neighbors on issues such as migration, trade, and efforts to counter drug trafficking.
