On the night of October 28th, the journalist and columnist Fredy Lopez Arevalo wasshot dead on the street where he lived. He and his family were returning from a trip to Tuxtla Gutierrez when an armed individual approached on a motorcycle and shot him in front of his house in Las Rosas neighborhood. The state police as well as the municipal police began a search for those responsible, but so far without success.
The State Attorney General’s Office commented that “it regretted this reprehensible fact and reaffirms its commitment to continue with the investigations until the facts are clarified, to guarantee the rule of law and reiterates that no criminal behavior will go unpunished.”
Fredy Lopez Arevalo wrote for El Universal and Proceso among others and covered the first days of the armed uprising of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) in Chiapas in 1994. In his last publication on social networks, he spoke about the dismissal of 200 workers from the city council of San Cristobal de las Casas.
With this case, the number of journalists murdered only during the presidential term of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador rises to 49. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Mexico occupies sixth place on the list of countries where the justice system does not solve the murders of journalists for the second year in a row.
