On June 8th, 2022, the municipal president of Teopisca, Ruben de Jesus Valdez Diaz, was assassinated outside his home in the morning by armed individuals on a motorcycle.
The State Attorney General’s Office opened the investigation of the crime of homicide, which makes 17 the number of mayors killed in the administration of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. He stated that the investigation will continue until they find the guilty persons. He also endorsed his commitment “with the people of Chiapas to guarantee the rule of law and so that no criminal conduct goes unpunished.”
Diaz, a member of the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico, began his term in office last year, a position that he would have held until 2024 in a region in Chiapas moved by the illicit trafficking of many activities that enter through the southern border. About 15 days ago a convoy of 14 vehicles with armed civilians and with a triangle marking all the doors of their vehicles was sighted.
