Chiapas: 29th Anniversary of EZLN Armed Uprising

Twenty-nine years after the armed uprising, militia, insurgents, support bases and sympathizers of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) gathered in the Caracoles, headquarters of the Good Government Councils, to remember the armed uprising that took place on January 1st, 1994.

In Jacinto Canek Caracol located in the Indigenous Center for Comprehensive Training (CIDECI), in San Cristobal de Las Casas, a document was read with a call addressed to young people: “Today we are going to celebrate 29 years of a struggle that began on  January1st , 1994. Many of you young people, many of you did not participate in this fight, but it is important that today we remember that important fact. (…) You, young people who have just joined the struggle, we would like you to continue so that the seed does not die. Many have been left behind, many of those who participated have already died or found nothing and have abandoned the fight.

(…) We would like to continue in resistance with you, cultivating our lands, fostering our sources of employment in our communities, in our ejidos, but that you do not leave as migrants, because when they come back they no longer have the idea of fighting. (…) Keep fighting, keep resisting. The work is not finished yet. Things are coming up that need the collaboration of the communities. We ask the new generations to learn how to organize, to learn to work within their towns and communities.”

In all the Caracoles, another year of the declaration of war against the Mexican government was celebrated through activities that included dances, sporting, cultural and political events.
