Chiapas: Roadblocks in Various Parts of the State

@El Heraldo de Chiapas

February came to a close with road blockades in different municipalities of Chiapas to demand attention to different social demands.

In the case of the municipality of Ocosingo, indigenous people from the Nueva Palestina community belonging to the Social Organization Coalition blocked the entrances to the municipal capital due to the alleged extortion by police against three Tseltals from whom they are said to have taken more than 100,000 pesos.

In this same municipality, members of the National Front for the Struggle for Socialism (FNLS) established three blockades on the Ocosingo-San Cristobal de Las Casas, Ocosingo-Altamirano and Acala-Venustiano Carranza roads, to request the appearance of Daniel Gomez Santiz, originally from the Rio Florido community whose whereabouts are unknown. They accuse the armed group of “Los Petules” and denounce the lack of actions by the authorities to locate him. “The Petules maintain their aggression in a context of illegal logging and sale of wood, so it is not by chance that they act with the intention of depriving our companions of life. In previous complaints we have made known the constant harassment of the military police forces and their coordination with the paramilitary group against communities such as Rio Florido and Carrizal in Ocosingo”, they said at a press conference that took place in San Cristobal de Las Casas.

In Venustiano Carranza, the mobilization was organized by teachers from the National Coordinator of Education Workers for various labor demands.

Finally, in Teopisca, inhabitants of 28 communities held protests against the interim mayor Josefa Sanchez Perez, whom they accuse of diverting resources from the treasury. They threatened to block the Pan-American highway if their demands were not met.
