Chiapas: Tsotsiles in Chalchihuitan Hold Pilgrimage for Life and Peace

@Parroquia de Chalchihuitan

On April 20th, Tsotsil Catholics from the municipality of Chalchihuitan made a pilgrimage to the capital of this municipality to demand the closure of canteens and that nearing voting “be done in peace, without weapons or violence; that the vote be free and secret.”

More than a thousand participants joined in this pilgrimage “For Life and Peace.” The parish priest of Chalchihuitan, Jose Elias Hernandez declared that a commission of 20 women delivered a document with their demands to the municipal presidency that same day. The population has been fighting against the canteens for a year and “they do not listen to us, on the contrary, these businesses increase,” the parish priest lamented. Similarly, “in the face of threats and rumors that certain political groups are arming themselves, the request is for peace, for peaceful voting, with great tranquility and freedom,” he also stated.
