Chiapas:  Journalist Roberto Flores Missing 

Roberto Flores, journalist and director of the “Chiapas Denuncia ¡Ya!” website is missing; he was last seen on September 20th in Comitan, Chiapas, where he comes from.

“Chiapas Denuncia ¡Ya!” is an news site that covers topics such as security of the state and citizen complaints against alleged irregularities by authorities in the state. According to the organization for freedom of expression Article 19, Flores had received intimidating messages after publishing information related to the Sinaloa Cartel. Various organizations and groups that monitor the human rights of journalists have joined their voices to demand that the journalist be presented alive.

According to records from organizations that defend freedom of expression, this year is shaping up to be one of the most violent against the press in the country. From January to August 23rd, Article 19 counts 11 journalists killed in possible relation to their journalistic work, its highest figure for this type of record in the last decade, exceeding the total number of crimes for full years, such as the seven of 2020 and 2021, respectively. Currently “in Mexico every 14 hours a journalist or media outlet is attacked for carrying out their work”, the same organization says.
