Following two years of silence, the EZLN published a communiqué in January of this year in observation of the death of Dom Samuel Ruiz García and in February a second one ten pages in length signed by Subcomandante Marcos entitled “On the wars,” which is part of an exchange with writer Luis Villoro. In this communiqué, Marcos analyzes the subject of the so-called war on organized crime in Mexico underatken by the government of Felipe Calderón, denouncing that “[t]his war will result not only in thousands of deaths and grand economic gains. Also, and above all, it will result in a country that is destroyed, depopulated, irredeemably broken.” Marcos adds that the principal beneficiary will be the government of the United States.
