National/Chiapas: Guatemalan Dies at the Hands of SEDENA Soldiers

@Chiapasparalelo

On March 29th, elements of the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) killed the Guatemalan Elvin Mazariegos Perez, 30, when he was returning to Guatemala after buying merchandise in Mexico. The events occurred near the Bacanton community, Mazapa de Madero municipality.

The car where the deceased Elvin Mazariegos was traveling was intercepted by soldiers of the XV Motorized Cavalry Regiment, who demanded that he identify himself and present his Regional Visitor Card. According to the soldiers who shot, Elvin Mazariegos and his companion refused to identify themselves, maintaining a threatening attitude, and started the vehicle in which they were traveling.

“There is an erroneous reaction on the part of the military personnel, because there was no aggression, but one of our elements fired a shot where he wounded one of the civilians who were in that vehicle; there were three people there”, the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena), Luis Cresencio Sandoval, admitted during the morning press conference of Tuesday, March 30th.

Relatives of the deceased explained that they have the document that the soldiers requested, because between the inhabitants of La Esperanza, Guatemala, and the Mazapa de Madero municipality, there is a commercial exchange in which documents are not usually requested to be carried, Chiapas Paraleloreported.

On hearing the shots, residents of La Esperanza rushed to the scene and detained the soldiers, their weapons and vehicles, while they demanded justice for the death of the Guatemalan man. After hours of dialogue, an economic reparation agreement was reached and legal actions were promised against the person responsible.

It is worth mentioning that the event occurs after Victoria Salazar, a Salvadoran woman, died in Tulum, Quintana Roo, after being subdued by four policemen, which has generated reactions at the national level.
