Chiapas: New Confrontation in Venustiano Carranza Leaves Four Dead

On June 12th, a new confrontation in the Paraiso del Grijalva community, between members of the Emiliano Zapata Peasant Organization (OCEZ- Casa del Pueblo) and the members of the San Bartolome de los Llanos Communal Alliance, left four people dead and five wounded. Three of the deceased belonged to Casa del Pueblo and one to the Alliance of San Bartolome de los Llanos. Both groups have been in dispute over seven thousand hectares for 45 years, an agrarian conflict that was reactivated since May 4th, preventing the installation of 80 polls in the elections of June 6th. In this new confrontation, the OCEZ-CP and the San Bartolome de Los Llanos Alliance in Venustiano Carranza accused each other of having been attacked by their adversaries.

In a statement, the General Secretariat of the Government of Chiapas said that they have made an insistent call to the Casa del Pueblo and the San Bartolome de los Llanos Alliance to establish a dialogue and solve the agrarian conflict, but that neither group has shown any willingness to settle their differences.
