The No to Mining for a Future for All Front (El Frente No a la Minería por un Futuro de Todxs) denounced that during the mobilization organized on October 11th demanding the cancellation of the San Jose mining project, operated by Fortuna Silver Mines, municipal and agrarian authorities of Valles Centrales in Oaxaca that make up The Front received threats from people who claimed to have weapons “to remove those from the mobilization” and to have the protesters identified.
Despite these threats, the municipal and agrarian authorities said that, in the exercise of their right to self-determination, they are “emphatically” opposed to the Cuzcatlan mining project. “Our mobilization action is peaceful, they stick to the law, within the constitutional framework and in compliance with the agreements of the general assembly to prohibit mining activities.” For this reason, they held the company responsible “for any aggression towards the authorities or citizens of Valles Centrales.”
It is worth mentioning that the requirement is also to deny the “new” environmental permit requested by the Cuzcatlan mining company before SEMARNAT, said Services for an Alternative Education (EDUCA) since the company has implemented 75 irregular projects.
The municipal and agrarian authorities request President Lopez Obrador to “guarantee and respect the rights of indigenous peoples, because the Cuzcatlan mining company has violated current environmental legislation and our rights as indigenous people”, and reiterated that “no mining project should be above the law.”
