Chiapas: Migrant Tragedy

@LaJornada

Thursday, December 9th, was marked by a terrible accident that left at least 53 dead and more than 50 injured, all of them migrants from Central America, mostly Guatemalans.

It happened on the Chiapa de Corzo-Tuxtla Gutierrez highway section at approximately 3:30 in the afternoon, when the driver of a trailer in which more than 100 people were traveling lost control while driving at excess speed. At the scene of the accident, elements of Civil Protection, the Mexican Red Cross and Firefighters arrived and confirmed that there were minors among the injured and deceased.

Authorities from both Mexico and Guatemala regretted what happened and expressed their support for the families of the victims: “I deeply regret the tragedy caused by the overturning of a trailer in Chiapas that was transporting Central American migrants. It is very painful. I hug the families of the victims”, said President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador through his Twitter account. For his part, Alejandro Giammattei, president of Guatemala, lamented the tragedy and expressed his solidarity with the families of the deceased, to whom he offered all the necessary consular assistance, including repatriations.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Mexico section, expressed “sincere condolences” and suggested that “immigration alternatives and legal avenues are required to avoid tragedies like this one.”

Civil society organizations, through their different pages and social networks, spoke out to demand from the authorities “truth, justice and reparation for the damage to the victims.” They also pointed out that this tragedy is a sign of the migratory crisis in the country and a terrible consequence of corruption and the control policies imposed by the Government of Mexico.
