In a statement published on January 17th, the prisoners of the organization Solidarios de la Voz del Amate in San Cristobal de Las Casas prison denounced the non-compliance of the Chiapas government when, in 2019, Governor Rutilio Escandon Cadenas promised to review the criminal records of indigenous prisoners unjustly detained. They did not receive information from that time until January of this year, when three of them received a sentence despite the fact that their files show irregularities and acts of torture.
“On January 12th of this year, compañeros Martin, Marcos and Mario Gomez Lopez, accused of homicides, were sentenced by the judge of the criminal branch of serious crimes of San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Armando Morales Cruz, these compañeros were sentenced to 31 years and nine months, it is clearly an injustice since they did not take into account the violation of his human rights at the time of his arrest, which was arbitrary, and the process that lasted 13 years and six months, nor did they take into account the tortures they were subjected to by the public ministry”, they stated.
They concluded their statement by expressing that they are “really very upset, full of indignation, rage and courage, given this decision by the judge, for which we request the intervention of the President of Mexico Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, as well as the National Human Rights Commission, we cannot continue to put up with the injustices of this current oppressive government.”
