On June 16th, in the framework of the Corpus Christi festival, the Believing People Pueblo Creyente and various civil organizations carried out a pilgrimage for peace in San Cristobal de Las Casas, convened by the pastor of the church of Guadalupe, Marcelo Perez Perez.

The pilgrimage started from the parish of Guadalupe towards the Plaza de la Paz, this walk was held due to the increase in violence in the city, especially in the context of June 14th when armed groups shot, burned vehicles and blocked streets at the exit to Chamula and through the market in the north, according to videos, photos and eyewitnesses.

Marcelo Perez explained that the demand is “to ask for an end to structural violence, to recover the awareness that we are all human beings. We all ask for peace, we are all human and if there is no peace, those who take up arms will not be at peace either”, according to Chiapas Paralelo.

Dressed in white, with white flags and banners, dozens of people walked some streets of the city and asked for “Peace, Life and Hope in San Cristobal de Las Casas.” The demonstrators demanded an end to violence, disappearances and multiple problems of insecurity in the city and called on the three levels of government to join forces to achieve peace and tranquility.

“When there is violence, the awareness that we are human beings is lost, we ask to recover the dignity that we have as human beings, to listen to the fifth commandment: Thou shall not kill”, the priest insisted.
