Guerrero: Calls for Halt to Repression of CECOP

On December 6th, the Council of Ejidos and Communities Opposing the La Parota Dam (CECOP) demanded the immediate release of two of its members, Modesto and Rodrigo Leon Jacinto, who, it denounced, were arbitrarily detained by the ministerial police last December 1st in the community of Huamuchitos, and tortured.

It outlined in a statement “the flagrant violation of human rights and due process” in the detention. It denounced that the police “violently entered the house where they were” and that the detainees “were tortured for more than seven hours.” It added that Rocibel Suástegui Jacinto was also wounded by a firearm and “was threatened by the police to take her children away from her, forcing her to make incriminating statements against her relatives.”

CECOP demanded the immediate release of the defenders by the authorities, reparation for the damage to Rocibel Suastegui, and an end to the repression, harassment, and criminalization of the members of CECOP.

Given what happened, more than 130 civil and social organizations as well as some 200 people demanded in a joint statement the release of these two prisoners and the “cessation of the acts of harassment and criminalization of members of the CECOP.” They declared that “it is really worrying that in the state of Guerrero these repressive acts against activists who defend the natural commons continue.”
