On March 31st, the Control Judge of Pichucalco sentenced the perpetrator of the murder of the human rights defender, Simon Pedro Perez Lopez, to 25 years in prison, in addition to ruling on financial “reparation” for the families. Faced with this sentence, relatives of the victim affirmed that the sentence is “insufficient”, at the same time that they asked to investigate the masterminds of the homicide and that “true justice” be done. It should be remembered that Perez Lopez was shot dead on July 5th, 2021 in the municipality of Simojovel.
For its part, the Fray Bartolome de Las Casas Center for Human Rights (Frayba) declared that “the sentence and reparation are the lowest and omits his work as a human rights defender that he carried out, as well as measures to repair the damage and non-repetition that are appropriate and culturally relevant. From Frayba we exposed the facts based on two eyewitnesses. There was the opportunity to issue a sentence from a human rights perspective by presenting the evidence that showed his activity as a defender. (…) The sentence is negligent, from what is dictated by the General Law of Victims, with respect to the fact that the criminal process must guarantee the right to the truth. It is not an isolated murder, for this reason we demand that the masterminds be investigated and minimum measures of comprehensive reparation be granted, from medical and psychological care, measures of satisfaction, and public recognition of his activity in defense of human rights.”
Likewise, the Frayba stressed that “it is important that special attention be paid to the continuity of violence that covers the region and the need for non-repetition measures that can protect his family, the community and Las Abejas de Acteal”.
