Chiapas: Pilgrimage for Peace in Las Margaritas

@SIPAZ

On July 9th, thousands of men, women, boys and girls, Catholic and evangelical parishioners made a pilgrimage to Las Margaritas, where their religious leaders asked to stop the increase in violence in all its forms. They pointed out in their municipalities “various manifestations of death that do not give up: sale of alcohol and drugs, prostitution houses, kidnapping attempts, gunfire, homicides, violence, abuse of power, clashes between organizations, forced displacement, embezzlement of resources, deficiency in health service”, among others.

They also claimed that “today we live in an atmosphere of tension, where they try to hide all these manifestations of death with festivities that […] contribute to seducing and taming the public to next year’s elections. Among the situations that are now being suffered are the conditioning of public resources and the existing favoritism with groups and localities related to the current administration.”

They also claimed that “the feeling of the people is helplessness on the part of the powers that represent us at the political level, since it has been shown that the interests of those who hold these positions are far removed from the needs of their people.”

Finally, they called on the entire population to act as “a united, conscious and organized people will be the best instrument to overthrow evil.”
