Chiapas/National: Chiapas among Top States for Femicides

On June 28th, the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection reported at a press conference that between January and May 2021, femicides have increased 7.1 percent in Mexico: during this period 423 women were victims of this crime. It explained that 57.4 percent of them are registered in eight entities: State of Mexico, Jalisco, Veracruz, Mexico City, Nuevo Leon, Sonora, Morelos and Chiapas.

During the same period, the Chiapas Feminist Observatory announced 80 cases of violent deaths of women, of which 30 were identified as femicides. In May alone, it documented 20 violent deaths of women, among these they observed six homicides, two suicides, three accidental cases, five femicides, three possible femicides and nine attempted femicides.

Although the feminist organizations in the state deemed positive the fact that the federal authorities no longer minimize this problem, they warned about the fact that the figures released fall short and that many cases are not always classified as femicides.
