Chiapas: No Respite from Violence in Chamic for Residents and Travellers

@ El Heraldo de Chiapas

In recent months, there have been reports of alleged clashes in the municipality of Frontera Comalapa, specifically in the well-known San Gregorio Chamic crossroads. Of these, the first occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, April 30th, when alleged organized crime groups left a trail of dead bodies and others, wounded. The second around 5:00 p.m. that same day, when the personnel of the 101 Infantry Battalion was intercepted and attacked by a group of heavily armed people.

On March 10th, another confrontation between armed groups had already taken place. Drivers’ reports warned of the presence of a convoy of trucks with “heavily armed civilians” who shot high-powered weapons in the area. These confrontations, which for months have terrorized citizens and affected the transit of civilians and carriers along this highway, led to at least 300 members of the Mexican Army being deployed in the municipalities of Frontera Comalapa and La Trinitaria with the intention of taking control. On May 10th, however, a shootout between elements of the Mexican army and a group operating in the Frontera Comapala region took place, resulting in ten soldiers injured.

On another note, the disappearances of people that were spread on social networks since the end of 2021 “increased dramatically in the considered “narco route” in Chamic”, reported La Silla Rota, where around 30 missing persons had been registered until that date.
