Chiapas: Pilgrimage against Violence in North of State

@Chiapas Paralelo

On May 21st, given the growing wave of violence that has hit the state, nearly a thousand people made a pilgrimage for peace in the northern part of the state. Zoque and Tsotsil peoples from the municipalities of Jitotol, Pueblo Nuevo, Rincon Chamula, Tapilula, Ixhuatan, Solosuchiapa, Ixtacomitan and Chapultenango participated. The pilgrimage left the Mirador de Rayon and walked to the center of this city demanding peace and security. It was convened by the Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation Commission, the Franciscan Family, the Organization of United Native Peoples, the Commission for the Defense of Human Rights and the Committee in Defense of Life, Territory and Mother Earth.

The demands revolved around the request for greater security, the prohibition of the clandestine sale of alcoholic beverages, the sale and distribution of drugs, against the megaprojects, as well as the demand for greater security and peace. At the rally “priests, activists, defenders of territory, asked the municipal authorities to reflect on the role they are playing in the fight against violence. Well, the pact must be with the people and not with organized crime”, reported Chiapas Paralelo.
