On September 7th, a judge from the Unitary Court of the Mixteca Region ordered the release of the last four members of the paramilitary group Social Welfare Union of the Triqui Region (UBISORT) implicated in the murder of human rights defenders Alberta Honey Trujillo and Jyri Antero Jaakkola.
After hearing the news, relatives of the victims reported that due to “the impossibility of finding justice in the country” they would take the case to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).
The Mexican Network of People Affected by Mining (REMA), of which Bety was the founder, lamented the release of the alleged murderers and demanded justice in a statement.
“REMA demands an end to impunity, punishment of those responsible for the murders, an end to intimidation and threats to defenders of the collective rights of the people.” “JUSTICE FOR BETY AND JYRI!”, the statement reads.
For its part, the Action Group for Human Rights and Social Justice (GADH), which legally accompanies the families of the victims, pointed out that “this is further proof of the complicity between the Oaxacan government and the paramilitary group” and announced the campaign Who is the Mexican Government Protecting?
