Within the framework of Freedom of Expression Day commemorated on June 7th, dozens of journalists from Chiapas marched in Tuxtla Gutierrez to demand that the authorities do justice for the murders and attacks against journalists, in addition to guarantee the exercise of its informative work.

Through a statement, they recalled the murder of more than 150 journalists since 2000 in Mexico (according to the organization Article 19). They also highlighted: “today we march again, not only to demand justice for those who are no longer here, but also so that there are no more cases of deaths for carrying out our work and the Mechanism for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists is improved.”

The year 2022 was considered the deadliest for journalism in the world, where Mexico ranked second with 15 journalists killed. So far in 2023, five journalists have been registered dead nationwide and the vast majority of those responsible for these crimes have not been brought to justice.

They recalled that in Chiapas justice is pending in the case of journalist Mario Gomez, shot to death in the municipality of Yajalon on September 21st, 2018. “His executor was jailed, but the mastermind remains free”, they added.

They also mentioned the case of Fredy Lopez Arevalo, murdered on October 28th, 2021 in San Cristobal de Las Casas. “The alleged perpetrators were found dead and that is not justice”, they said.
