Chiapas: Members of Diocesan Coordination of Women (CODIMUJ) March

@Cuarto Poder

On November 25th, within the framework of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, members of the Diocesan Coordination of Women (CODIMUJ) marched in San Cristobal de Las Casas before arriving at Cathedral Square where they raised a Mayan altar and did a traditional ritual. Several of them held white flowers and banners or blankets with slogans in favor of women’s rights, justice and peace; this is a way of making themselves heard by the authorities so that the violence against them stops, particularly sexist violence and that caused by organized crime groups in their communities.

They were joined by another group that had just participated in the second meeting of internally forcibly displaced indigenous women. For their part, they claimed that “the different forms of violence that we share with all women, in addition to those that, based on our ethnicity and the practice of customs and practices, poverty, historical exclusion and the situation of forced displacement that we experience, place us in the background of social stratification.”
