Chiapas: News from prisoners in two Chiapas state prisons

On 8 October, Alberto Patishtan,  a man who has been imprisoned for 12 years and is a member of the organization La Voz del Amate, left surgery where he had had an operation for a tumor that had seriously affected his vision.  In previous days, prisoners from the Other Campaign in prison no. 5 in San Cristóbal de Las Casas denounced by telephone that Patishtán found himself held on a bed in the National Institute for Neurology “Manuel Velasco Suárez” in Mexico City.  Pedro López Jiménez, spokesperson for the prisoners in solidarity with the Voz del Amate, denounced that “what they are doing to him is psychological torture and violation of his rights.”

In the media has come news also of the birthday of Francisco Santiz López, a Zapatista support-base from Banavil, Tenejapa, who has been imprisoned for a year, accused of charges “that the judge has already determined as baseless,” as noted by La Jornada.  The Fray Bartolome de Las Casas Center for Human Rights which has followed the case indicates that Francisco Santiz continues to be accused of the crime of carrying a firearm of exclusive use of the Army, while the other charges of homicide and assault which led him to imprisonment have been suspended since 22 March.

In other news, the Commission on Human Rights in Chiapas has reported that since “Sunday 7 October, around 6:00pm, close to 290 prisoners in the CERESO No. 16 ‘El Encino’ in Ocosingo, Chiapas, have declared themselves ON PEACEFUL HUNGER STRIKE, against the present director of the prison, ROGER GUZMAN PACHECO, demanding his immediate resignation, as well as that of Alcaide and the social worker, due to human rights violations committed against the prisoners and their families who visit the dungeon weekly.”
