National: Militarization in Mexico Increasing – Centro ProDH

On June 30th, the Miguel Agustin Pro Juarez Human Rights Center (Prodh Center) presented the report “Military Power, the National Guard and the Risks of Renewed Military Leadership” that shows the intense militarization in the Republic in the last decades.

The 322-page report seeks to recall “that a process of gradual demilitarization of public life is urgently needed to make security policies more efficient, to reduce human rights violations and to redirect the civil-military relationship in the logic of a democracy that opts for the civil path.”

The Prodh Center, which for more than 30 years has documented and denounced impunity in crimes and serious human rights violations committed by the Armed Forces, dedicates a chapter of its report to the National Guard in which it highlights how it is not a security body of a civil nature as mandated in its constitutional creation. Instead, it highlights how militarization has deepened during the current six-year term of office with the 4T just as with previous governments.

“The militarization during the current administration reached a legal depth not seen before. Legal changes are being accompanied by an extensive use of the Armed Forces for tasks other than their ordinary constitutional functions: the participation of the Army in the construction of public works and in other functions has become common during the six-year term of office”, the report highlights.
