Chiapas: Alarming Femicidal Violence – Two Women and a Minor Murdered in Tapachula

@Gobierno de México

On July 6th, Damaris Belen, 27, her daughter Johana Yamileth, 9, and her sister-in-law Deysi Azucena, 35, were stabbed to death inside a house on the outskirts of Tapachula. After the discovery, the Prosecutor’s Office against Homicide and Femicide announced that it had opened an investigation file, complying with the Protocol for Action with a Gender Perspective and in compliance with the Protocol for Femicide in Chiapas.

This case illustrates the alarming femicidal violence that is experienced in the state, Chiapas being one of the states with the highest number of victims of femicide in the country, a trend that has been increasing since the end of last year. The Chiapas Feminist Observatory reported “80 cases of violent deaths of women between January and May 2021, of which 30 were identified as femicides. In May alone, it documented 20 violent deaths of women.”

The Chiapas Citizen Observatory once again demanded that the different levels of government “consider these data to implement public policies with a gender perspective.” It should be remembered that since 2018 a Gender Violence Alert was declared for femicidal violence in the state, without any improvement to date.
