Oaxaca: Isthmus Residents Reject Imposition of Simulated Consultations for Industrial Parks

In a press conference that took place on May 25th in Mexico City, communities of Oaxaca, parts of the Assembly of Indigenous Peoples of the Isthmus in Defense of Land and Territory (APIIDTT) rejected the “simulation of consultations indigenous peoples” to impose the installation of industrial parks in the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

According to the information released by the body responsible for the Corridor chaired by Rafael Marin Mollinedo, in the first 15 days of this month, informative and consultative assemblies were held in accordance with international protocols.

On the other hand, in their communiqué the communities of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec indicated that said consultations are “a complete lie, the peoples have not endorsed any consultation, since in this series of  a sort of consultations, not even 5% of the population of the communities have participated.”They stated that decision-making was left in the hands of municipal and agrarian authorities, whom they held responsible for “using their public office to support the consultation processes and the dispossession of land from indigenous peoples.”

Finally they called for solidarity towards those affected by the Interoceanic Corridor, other megaprojects, or acts of injustice on the part of “bad governments” and companies. They finally announced a meeting to be held on June 19th and 20th, 2021, in the Puente Madera community.
