Chiapas: 17 Student Teachers and Two Displaced from Chenalho to Face Trial; Protests for Release Continue

@Pie de Pagina

On May 25th, a state judge decreed preventive detention against 17 student teachers from Mactumatza and two displaced people from Chenalho, accused of the crimes of rioting, gang activity, robbery with violence, attacks against peace and the bodily and patrimonial integrity of the community and the State, as well as damages. For this reason, they will be imprisoned in the State Center for Social Reintegration for Sentenced Persons (CERSS) Number 14, “El Amate”.

Their arrest along with 74 students from the same Normal Rural School (who were released two days before and will be able to continue their trial in freedom) occurred on May 18th, while they were blocking the passage on the highway from Tuxtla Gutierrez to San Cristobal de Las Casas to demand that the normal entrance exam be carried out in person and not online.

Strikingly on the 25th, the undersecretary of Federalized Education, Jose Luis Hernandez de Leon, reported that the exam for new entry to the Mactumactza Rural Normal School will be held in person on July 9th.

Outside the prison, student teachers from the Jacinto Canek and Mactumatza schools and parents from the Lazaro Cardenas community began a march towards the El Amate prison to demand the release of the young people still detained. they stated that if they do not release the the 17 student teachersnand the two displaced from Chenalho, they will seek a way to sabotage the elections on June 6th under the slogan “If there is no liberation, there is no election.”

There have been blockades and marches in various parts of the state. From Mexico City, mothers and fathers of the 43 disappeared student teachers from the Escuela Rural Normal de Ayotzinapa, Guerrero, marched to protest the repression and imprisonment of the student teachers from Chiapas.

On May 26th, hundreds of students, parents and teachers attached to the CNTE marched again in Tuxtla Gutierrez to demand the unconditional release of the 19.
