Guerrero: Nine Months since Forced Disappearance of Vicente Suastegui, CECOP Member

On May 5th, a political-cultural act was held in Acapulco in which organizations and groups of the disappeared demanded the presentation with life of the defender of the territory, Vicente Suastegui Muñoz, disappeared by armed men on August 5th, 2021.

Every Thursday and Friday, search days are being organized in which relatives and organizations participate in the surroundings and in the neighborhoods of Acapulco, to date without results.

“I want to take him by the raised arm, with the Parota machete that stopped this monster with a thousand heads. I have already faced the government, the army, the navy, I have faced businessmen, I have faced neoliberal governments, I have faced prison, torture, I have witnessed the murder of many of my colleagues and persecution, but today I can’t beat this monster called enforced disappearance. He torments me night and day. He yells at me, where is Vicente? This situation really doubles us, but it does not break us. This situation really tires us, but they will never be able to annihilate us”, says Marco Antonio Suastegui, brother of Vicente and spokesman for the Council of Ejidos and Communities Opposed to the La Parota Dam (CECOP).

Vicente Suastegui is a defender of the lands of the Council of Ejidos and Communities Opposed to the Parota Dam, “a mega neoliberal project, from which the demand derives because we all recognize and maintain that Vicente’s disappearance is for political reasons, because of his participation in defense of the earth. The CECOP is a movement that has been repressed, several have fallen, they have been deprived of their liberty and have had to live in fear at the drop of a hat”, La Montaña Tlachinollan Human Rights Center said in a statement.

Marco Antonio Suastegui ended the event by calling on the government of Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador to return to see Guerrero, “because this is a problem that has been going on for many years, which began with this war against drug traffickers, but today no one has done anything and they have not wanted to do anything. I demand that the governor hand me over my brother Vicente, because she made a commitment to us there in the communal property of Cacahuatepec. There are no more excuses for not giving him to us. There are four confessed detainees who have said who has Vicente and where they have him, where they move him. We have the hope, then, after 270 days, of finding Vicente alive.”
