The Zapatista caracol Resistance toward a new dawn in La Garrucha
The Good-Government Council (JBG) Path toward the Future has denounced provocations and looting of recuperated lands in the settlement Nuevo Purísima (autonomous municipality of Francisco Gómez) on the part of persons residing in the neighborhoods Puerto Arturo and San José las flores in the city of Ocosingo, who say they do not pertain to any organization, although the Junta notes that they receive support from the local PAN office.
On September 18, a group of 45 persons calling themselves “independents” arrived to “appropriate” in Nuevo Purísima a recuperated territory of 178 hectares where Zapatista support-bases work. The communiqué notes that “these persons are people organized by the bad government and they offer to provoke EZLN support-bases. These persons have been transported by two three-ton trucks belonging to the mayor of Ocosingo (Arturo Zúñiga Urbina).”
On 19 September around 8am, another group of 100 persons from the ranch Las Conchitas and the ejido P’ojcol (municipality of Chilón), who “are paramilitaries,” says the JBG, “also entered to ‘appropriate’ recuperated land on which work and lvie our comrade support-bases from the settlement Nuevo Paraíso, whcih pertains to the autonomous municipality Francisco Villa.” Carrying firearms, these persons “began to measure the measure the surroundings of the recovered lands.”
The JBG finishes its communiqué with the following: “BROTHERS AND SISTERS: WE ARE DENOUNCING THE AGGRESSIONS AGAINST OURSELVES AND THE 3 LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT DO NOTHING. THEY DO NOTHING BECAUSE THEY ARE THE SAME ORGANIZERS; THEY PLAN IT ALL WITH THE MONEY FROM THE TAXES OF THE PEOPLE OF MEXICO AND THE UN. THEY SPEND TO DESTROY. THE DIGNIFIED PEACE [IS] WHAT WE ZAPATISTAS WANT. WE DO NOT WANT TO DIE BUT THE BAD GOVERNMENTS OBLIGE US TO DIE. FOR THIS REASON WE WILL DEFEND OURSELVESÑ THAT SHOULD REMAIN CLEAR. FOR EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS CALDERÓN, SABINES, AND THE MUNICIPALITIES WILL BE RESPONSIBLE.
THE GOOD-GOVERNMENT COUNCIL PUBLICLY DECLARES THAT ALL THE LANDS RECUPERATED BY THE EZLN WILL BE DEFENDED REGARDLESS OF THE COST. THE BAD GOVERNMENT KNOWS WELL THAT THE RECUPERATED LANDS HAVE BEEN PAID FOR SINCE 1994. AND NOW WE WILL NOT PERMIT THAT SOME OTHERS COME TO TAKE AWAY OUR LANDS, NOR WILL WE PERMIT THAT THEY CONTINUE LOOTING AND HARASSING OUR COMRADE ZAPATISTA SUPPORT-BASES.”
