Chiapas: Release of the 3 arrested in the Puebla Colony. “Unjustified delay,” denounces the CDHFBC

During the night of 23 July, Mariano Méndez, his son Luciano Méndez (both Zapatistas) and Juan López were released, being residents of the Puebla Colony (neighborhood) in the Chenalhó municipality who had been arrested on 20 July.  The Fray Bartolome de Las Casas Center for Human Rights (CDHFBC) released a bulletin denouncing that in the case “the resort to habeas corpus was delayed unjustifiably.”  The CDHFBC reported that “they were incarcerated for approximately 67 hours in unhealthy conditions, without receiving food, and furthermore in the judicial investigation there was seen a baseless delay on the part of the Public Ministry in its consideration of the evidence in favor of the arrested.”

Beyond this, the CDHFBC registered new data and testimony regarding the events of 20 July, warning that those it had interviewed had expressed fear in light of the “situation of violence that has worsened with the release of those responsible for the Acteal massacre, as has been ordered by the Supreme Court for Justice in the Nation.”  The Center demanded “urgent” attention to the violence, “given that it has already provoked violations to the rights to liberty, physical security, and others.”
