Chiapas: High Levels of Violence – Italian Volunteer Murdered in San Cristobal de Las Casas

@yahoo!noticias

On July 11th, 42-year-old Italian volunteer, Michele Colosio, cyclist, agroecologist, farmer and radiologist, was murdered in San Cristobal de Las Casas. “Michele Colosio was murdered last night. His well-known and wide smile faded, he was killed in an assault, a block from his house, returning from the festivities for the European Championship (which Italy won on Sunday)”, reported the Yi ‘bel ik’Raiz (Wind Root) community house, where Colosio collaborated.

On the afternoon of July 13th, activists, friends, and acquaintances of the Italian gathered in the San Cristobal Cathedral Square to demand justice for the murder. Colosio arrived in Chiapas in 2011, to work on health projects and join actions to seek the freedom of political prisoners detained in Chiapas and Mexico, such as the case of Alberto Patishtan. “The murder could be for his defense of the wetlands, in which inhabitants of several neighborhoods participate”, one of Colosio’s neighbors said.

This case illustrates the increasing level of violence in San Cristobal de Las Casas today. In the center of this “Magic Town” there have been shootings outside bars, robberies and other criminal acts that have affected citizens, the media stressed.
