@La Jornada

On July 14th, the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) announced the arrest of Hugo Rolando “N”, allegedly responsible for the murder of the human rights defender, Simon Pedro Perez Lopez.

Simon Pedro, through his work in Las Abejas de Acteal and in the Santa Catarina Parish in the municipality of Pantelho, worked in the promotion and defense of the rights of indigenous peoples, and accompanied the communities in denouncing violence and the search for justice.

The arrest, carried out by elements of the Specialized Police, occurred in the La Mesilla ejido, municipality of Tzimol, near the border region of Comalapa. The FGE indicated that Hugo Rolando was transferred to Tuxtla Gutierrez to determine his legal situation.

The priest Marcelo Perez Perez commented that the detainee owned one of the buildings where explosives were found in the community of Nuevo Israelita, municipality of Simojovel, where Simon Pedro was originally from.

Simon Pedro’s work was key in denouncing the responsibility of the Mexican State in the Acteal massacre and in demanding a report on the merits of the massacre from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
