There have been several violent events experienced in the state of Chiapas in recent months. However, in recent weeks, shootings and clashes between armed groups in San Cristobal de Las Casas have shocked civil society.
One of these cases was that of a group of people on motorcycles who fired shots from weapons in different parts of the city. According to Cuarto Poder media, on Friday one of the members of this group – named Eduardo – was injured by the opposing group for which he was transferred to the Hospital de las Culturas by his same companions where he later died. On Saturday, presumably during Eduardo’s wake, shots were also fired into the air from which a stray bullet caused the death of a seven-year-old girl who was sleeping at her home. In addition, on Sunday, when the deceased was transferred to the cemetery, the group again shot off their weapons without any injuries being registered.
Faced with this, the Municipal Police Directorate reported that security would be reinforced in the northern area of San Cristobal in order to identify and prevent acts of this type. Members of the Municipal Police were deployed to carry out preventive patrols and checkpoints in the North Peripheral Road of the city.
A couple of weeks ago, clashes between armed groups were also reported in the town of Molino de los Arcos, which left two people dead and two others injured, as well as a tortilla factory and several houses burned down.
This violence puts the inhabitants in a situation of vulnerability and danger, who say they are afraid of going out on the streets and being victims of these criminal groups and also regret that the authorities are not addressing this situation of violence.
Civil society and ecclesiastical organizations also denounced the inaction of the authorities and the increase in violence in the city. The Fray Bartolome de Las Casas Center for Human Rights said that “shots with high caliber weapons, and clashes between armed groups under the permissiveness of the municipal and state authorities of the Chiapas government are reported to us daily.”
