After two years of not being held due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the “XVI Caravan of Mothers of Missing and Disappeared Migrants” arrived in Mexico on May 2nd. The more than 45 people from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, relatives of missing migrants in Mexico, entered through Tapachula, Chiapas and toured the states of Tabasco, Veracruz and Mexico City. In each of these places, they carried out various activities and meetings with authorities to highlight the violence of which migrants are victims in their transit through Mexico and ask for justice and support to find them. On this occasion, the president of the Mesoamerican Migrant Movement, Talia Vazquez, pointed out that in recent years “the case of many migrants who are unjustly imprisoned in Mexican jails, normally accused of being kidnappers, when they and they are the kidnapped ones, is notorious.”
During their stay in Mexico City, the eleventh March of National Dignity to demand justice in Mexico was held on May 10th (within the framework of Mother’s Day), with the participation of members of more than 60 family groups. who are part of the Movement for our disappeared in Mexico and which the Caravan of Central American Mothers joined. They left the Monument to the Mother and walked to the Angel of Independence, carrying banners and photographs and shouting slogans to demand justice.
During their tour they made a stop at what was known as the Glorieta de la Palma, which some groups have renamed as Glorieta of the Disappeared and intervened with photographs and graves like the ones in which they had to look for their relatives.
Mexico is close to reaching 100,000 missing and unaccounted for people according to official figures.
