Chiapas: Forced Displacement of BAEZLN Families Denounced

@Sipaz

In an urgent action, the Fray Bartolome de Las Casas Center for Human Rights denounced the forced displacement of six Zapatista families and the burning of their houses and belongings on July 14th in the Comandanta Ramona autonomous municipality.

The Support Base families of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (BAEZLN) were in “El Esfuerzo” community when ejidatarios from Muculum Bachajon “headed by the ejido commissioner together with municipal police and civil protection agents” entered violently, displacing the families and setting fire to their belongings. While the families took refuge in the Xixintonil community, the ejidatarios mounted guard until July 15th. That same night they shot “high caliber” firearms, according to what was documented by the human rights organization.

Frayba said that this aggression “puts at serious risk the Autonomy and free Determination of the Peoples and denotes a serious violation of the right to security, life and the integrity of the Zapatista families.”

“From Frayba we demand that the rights of the autonomous territories be respected in the face of what today is a permanent and deepened impunity; we call on civil society, national and international, to speak out for the defense of the land and territory, for the safety and personal integrity of the Zapatista peoples, now of the people of El Esfuerzo”, they concluded.
