On the night of May 22nd, 2023, Gilberto Lopez Santiz, an indigenous Tseltal member of the Support Bases of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (BAEZLN) was the victim of an armed attack. He was wounded, with a shot to the left side of his body at chest level. Hours earlier, the Moises y Gandhi Autonomous Community, Lucio Cabañas Autonomous Municipality (Ocosingo, Chiapas) reported the armed attack perpetrated by members of the Ocosingo Regional Coffee Growers Organization (ORCAO). It has been denounced that the public health care services have not wanted to receive Gilberto Lopez Santiz, justifying that they do not have the instruments and medical personnel to carry out the surgery and give him the necessary care.
According to the information received by the Executive Secretary of the REDTDT NETWORK, “the events began at 4:32 p.m. when members of ORCAO from El Sacrificio community, Ocosingo municipality, shot firearms, the record of which noted 130 small caliber shots and 15 high caliber shots.
Givthese events, the communities demanded that urgent medical care be provided to Lopez Santiz, in order to safeguard his life and physical and psychological integrity; investigate and establish responsibilities for the criminal act of attempted homicide and armed attack perpetrated against the inhabitants of the Moises y Gandhi community; and the immediate cessation of the armed attacks against the BAEZLN of Caracol 10 by ORCAO.
