Last Monday, May 2nd, members of the Regional Organization of Coffee Growers of Ocosingo (ORCAO) attacked the communities of Emiliano Zapata and La Resistencia, located in the town of Moises Gandhi, belonging to the Good Government Council “New Dawn in Resistance for the Life and Humanity”, Caracol 10 “Blossoming the Rebel Seed”.
These attacks continued on the 4th and 5th, finally causing the displacement of a total of 83 people, including girls, boys, women, men, elderly women and men.
Organizations such as the Ajmaq Resistance and Rebellion Network and the National Network of Civil Human Rights Organizations All Rights for All, documented and denounced the attacks and pointed out that in addition to shooting at the residents of the communities, the members of the ORCAO burned the autonomous Zapatista school and the garage of a member of the Support Bases of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (BAEZLN).
In communiqués from both Networks where they collect some testimonies, they indicated that “residents of the region denounce that the acts of violence against the BAEZLN have been constant during the last three years, increasing considerably in recent months that armed attacks have been registered, theft of crops, destruction of property and forced displacement.”
Faced with the situation, Red TDT launched an urgent action through which it demands the intervention of the authorities to cease the attacks on the Zapatista communities and territories and to guarantee security conditions for the prompt return of the displaced to their homes, as well as the repair of material damage caused.
