sierra

On 28 November, Juventina Villa Mojica, leader of the Organization of Ecologist Campesinos of the Sierra de Petatlán and Coyuca de Catalán, was murdered together with her son during an ambush in the Sierra Madre del Sur.  The activists were attacked despite the fact that they had been protected by at least 25 agents from the State Preventive Police who had been assigned to ensuring their security since May 2012.  Since 1999, leaders and other members of the is organization have been subjected to murders, disappearances, prison, and exile.

Social organizations that comprise the Front of Popular Masses of the State of Guerrero announced that they would proceed legally before international institutions against governor Ángel Aguirre Rivero in the case of the ecologists.  Beyond this, Humberto Salgado Gomez, secretary for Governance, claimed that Villa Mojica was herself responsible for her death and that of her 10-yaer old son, because she had temporarily left her escort.
