Amidst strong rumors of a Zapatista mobilization on 21 December, the state government of Chiapas released 4 prisoners, 2 of them Zapatista support-bases, who had been held in the penal institution of Motozintla, so as to “contribute to the reduction of tensions” and the strengthening of “tolerance and peace” in the state.  An official communique reported the release of Aníbal López Monzón and Carlos López Monzón, both of them Zapatista support-bases, as well as of their brothers Juan and Jacobo López Monzón, who had been incarcerated since June 2012.  Part of this determination included the cancellation of an arrest-order against Alfonso Cruz Espinoza, also a Zapatista support-base hailing from San Antonio Toniná.  Additionally, the state government announced “the convenience of a minimal mechanism” for communication with the Good-Government Councils which would facilitate the prevention and resolution of any conflict that might arise.

It should be recalled that upon taking power on 8 December, the new governor Manuel Velasco Coello expressed his recognition of the political and cultural contributions made by the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) and the Good-Government Councils.

The arrest of the López Monzón brothers, residents of the autonomous rebel municipality “Tierra y Libertad,” took place on 20 July.  The La Realidad JBG had denounced in November that they had been imprisoned solely for being Zapatistas.
