National: Indigenous Peoples Get Provisional Suspension of Presidential Agreement on Megaprojects

@Mujeres y la Sexta

On January 10th, 2022, the National Indigenous Congress and the Indigenous Government Council (CNI – CIG) announced at a press conference that they obtained from a federal judge the provisional suspension of the presidential agreement that declares the government works and federal projects of public interest and national security. This is a response to the 17 appeals against the presidential agreement, filed by indigenous peoples and communities from Jalisco, Queretaro, Puebla, Morelos, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Campeche, Quintana Roo, Yucatan and CDMX, all participants in the CNI.

The presidential agreement ignores “the requirements established in the Constitution and in international conventions and regulatory laws; thus violating the rights of our peoples in order to enable the imposition of infrastructure works and large megaprojects that, such as the Tehuantepec Isthmus Interoceanic Corridor, the Maya Train, the New International Airport of Mexico City and the Morelos Comprehensive Project, making possible a greater dispossession of our peoples”, the CNI stated.

At the CNI press conference, with the assistance of CEMDA, Indignation CA and FUNDAR, they pointed out that with this suspension “the Mexican neoliberal government is provisionally prevented from carrying out the actions indicated in its illegal agreement, such as declaring its projects of  “Public Interest” and “National Security”, cynically reiterating their decision to trample on the rights of anyone, using their armed groups to do so.”

The members of the Coordination and Follow-up Commission of the CNI-CIG made a call to all the indigenous peoples of Mexico “to be attentive to the imposition of the megaprojects of death and the way in which the judiciary can act in the face of the decision of our peoples to defend their territories.”
