Chiapas: Chicomuselo Believing People and MODEVITE Pilgrimage

On June 12th, the Believing People from the San Pedro and San Pablo parish of Chicomuselo, belonging to the Diocese of San Cristobal de Las Casas, and the Movement in Defense of Life and Territory (MODEVITE) carried out a pilgrimage in Chicomuselo in the framework of the feast of the Holy Trinity.

They warned about “the constant social decomposition marked by structural and institutionalized violence, drug trafficking, murders, lack of access to justice, organized crime, the increase in bars and canteens, prostitution and human trafficking, family disintegration, poverty, rape of human and collective rights, extortion at all levels, intimidation and persecution of women and men who seek peace with justice and dignity. We find ourselves as peoples in a state of siege and forced dispossession of many families and even communities.”

They also denounced “the growing migration forced by the control of land and territory by a system where the interests of a few prevail over the life and dignity of people”, as well as “the lack of will and capacity of the authorities at the three levels of government to attend to these social problems.”

For the same reason, they demanded that several demands be met, including “That the rule of law be enforced for society in general”; “Definitive cancellation of mining projects”; “Annulment of the re-municipalization project in the ejidos of Pablo L. Sidar and Union Buena Vista”; “No to MOSCAMED and ecotourism programs and projects in our regions”; “No more femicides: Justice”; “Respect for the pastoral work process of the San Pedro y San Pablo Parish and MODEVITE” and “No to militarization because it causes intimidation to our communities”, among others.
