Chiapas: Three Dead and Various Wounded in Tila

On September 11th, three people died and six more received gunshot wounds as a result of an attack according to some media, a confrontation according to others, which took place in the municipality of Tila, between ejidatarios and protesting residents.

It should be remembered that five years ago, the ejidatarios recovered, by legal means, their territorial rights, with which the municipal seat was transferred to the community of El Limar.

The Vicarage of Justice and Peace of the Diocese of San Cristobal recalled that “almost three weeks ago a group of residents of the Tila ejido carried out blockades at the main entrance and on other sections near the town. (…) We know that there was the intention of a process of dialogue and negotiation to seek a solution to the conflict, but apparently the situation got out of control and therefore it is suggested that the true causes of the events be investigated.”

The Tila ejido reported that, on September 11th, “a group of ejidatarios went to unblock the barrier and they were met with bullets. We have a dead colleague and several wounded. The fellow ejidatarios defended themselves. That’s what the City Council and that damn family of paramilitaries are doing.”In the last fifteen days, it had denounced shootings from these blockades to intimidate the ejidatarios.

According to La Jornada, residents who support the city council, dissatisfied with not having ejidalrights and those who organized the blockades, are “led by former mayor Arturo Sanchez Sanchez, and his son Francisco Arturo Sanchez Martinez, brother and nephew respectively of Samuel Sanchez Sanchez, imprisoned in “El Amate” for two decades, who led the paramilitary group Paz y Justicia, accused of committing dozens of crimes in 1997 and 1998 in the northern part of the state, in the context of the low intensity war against the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN).”

Given the events, the official Tila City Council that dispatches from El Limar disapproved of the confrontation as a way to resolve differences and declared: “We are a responsible administration with legality and committed to the rule of law, consequently, we make an attentive call for prudence, to all the groups and to all the parties involved in the events that occurred in the last hours”, the municipal president Limberg Gregorio Gutierrez Gomez (of the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico) declared.
