Chiapas: New Attacks in Aldama Condemned Following Recent “Definitive” Peace Agreement

On November 29th, the Fray Bartolome de Las Casas Center for Human Rights reported new attacks with heavy caliber firearms targeting the Tabak community, municipality of Aldama, according to testimonies, from the point known as Telemax in Santa Martha, Chenalho, with a toll of one wounded in the right leg, Andres Jimenez Perez, member of the Permanent Commission of the 115 community members of Aldama. The day before, shots had also been reported but no one was injured. 

These latest events occurred after a “Definitive Agreement” was signed between Aldama and Chenalho on November 27th to resolve the old agrarian dispute between the two municipalities dating from 1975, an act in which the territorial modification was agreed for the plans for both parties to distribute the 60 hectares in dispute, 32.5 hectares corresponding to Aldama and the rest to Santa Martha, Chenalho. 

Alejandro Encinas Rodriguez, undersecretary for Human Rights, Population and Migration, present at the event announced that the signing of the document will be a legal precedent, as it will help clarify the agrarian issue. In a statement, he also indicated that the damage to the victims of the conflict will be seen to with reparations. Another measure exercised by the federal government to guarantee the conditions of peace and security, he said, will be cooperation between the National Guard and the state security forces, for which he called on the inhabitants not to allow “people outside the area to hinder the fulfillment of the agreement.” 

Faced with the new aggressions, Frayba demanded that the authorities of the federal and state governments stop the armed aggressions definitively and effectively.
