On May 11th, the maritime delegation made up of seven Zapatistas that last May began their “Journey for Life – Europe Chapter” reached the coasts of the Azores Islands, Portugal, after 47 days of travel. It hopes to disembark in the next few days at the port of Vigo (Galicia).
Meanwhile, in Chiapas, another Zapatista delegation that had planned to travel by plane to Europe to meet the squadron that traveled by sea still cannot obtain passports. This was denounced by the Insurgent Subcommander Galeano of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) in a June 14th communiqué in which he mentions “outrageous obstacles” and accuses the Ministry of Foreign Relations of “racism.” “All the papers are presented, but the problem is that, in the eyes of the bureaucracy, the color of the skin, the way of speaking, the way of dressing and the place of origin is what counts“, he criticized.
“So much blah, blah, blah of rights and recognition of our roots, and so on – including hypocritical pardons requested on the land to be destroyed – but the native population, or indigenous, continues to be treated as foreigners in their own land”, the text of Subcommander Galeano states. “To the south of the Taxqueña Metro, everything is Central America”, he said.
The following day, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador ordered the Secretary of Foreign Relations (SRE), Marcelo Ebrard, to review and resolve the refusal to authorize passports to the delegation. “Today it is seen to, regardless of whether a mistake was made, help, facilitate because we are not authoritarian, we are not undemocratic, we are respectful of freedoms”, he said.
