Chiapas: Armed Attack by Tsotsiles in Esquipulas Guayabal

@ Chiapas paralelo

The territorial conflict in the Esquipulas Guayabal community in the municipality of Chapultenango, Chiapas, is nothing new – it has existed since the eruption of Chichonal volcano on March 28th in 1982, but now it seems to be getting worse.

Before the territory was occupied by the Zoque indigenous people who were displaced by the eruption, but when they returned to their lands, they were already occupied by Tsotsiles, so a dispute began in the courts and after several decades, last month of October they finally won the lawsuit and the lands were awarded to the Zoques.

A month after the decision of the Unitary Agrarian Court of District 3 in Tuxtla Gutierrez, the Zoques denounced armed attacks by a group of Tsotsiles on November 21st, 2021 in the Esquipulas Guayabal community at ten in the morning.

At this time, an exact number of the participants of the armed group is not known, but there are injured, dead and missing people, including women and children, as well as 35 houses burned, reported the Zoques on social networks. Various civil and human rights organizations demanded of the Federal and State authorities “their immediate intervention and that the corresponding and pertinent actions be carried out in accordance with the Law.”
